We all are aware that leather is an imperishable and a pliable material, which is made from the skin of an animal by using tanning process. But in case you want to buy some leather product it is difficult to differentiate between real leather and artificial leather. Faux leather is one of the alternative of Pure leather in the market. But what is this faux leather? How it is made? Is it durable enough?

WHAT IS FAUX LEATHER AND HOW IT IS MADE?

Faux is basically a French word which means “fake”. And Faux Leather is artificial leather or one can say that it is simply a deputy to the Pure Leather. It is less expensive but be in existence to provide the pleasure of Pure Leather at lesser cost. It is a synthetic material which has its uses in clothing, furniture, etc. The next fact might even surprise you but Faux Leather is used in cars as well. We have two types of Faux Leathers namely POLYVINYL CHLORIDE and POLYURETHANE. Polyvinyl chloride is manufactured by chemically treating dye and other plastic materials. The resulting fabric color resembles animal skin, is flexible and gives natural look as well. On the other hand, Polyurethane is manufactured by topping cotton or wool with polymer based material. This produces a fabric which completely gives the leather like look.

IS FAUX LEATHER DURABLE?

Now we all know that Faux Leather is convenient, flexible, vegan friendly, less expensive and ethical. But is it durable enough?  This answer might be a source of amazement but various tests have proved that faux leather has been more durable than Pure Leather. But yes, durability of Faux Leather depends on the quality of the fabrics used in the manufacturing process. One can use “Leather Honey Conditioner” for maintaining its shine.
